“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)

The phrase “Helicopter Parenting” is growing rapid in today’s society. It has been written in several articles lately about how parents are not allowing their kids any breathing room to grow up. Parents are described as hovering over their children in every situation which hinders their child’s ability to learn on their own. It’s only natural for most parents to detach themselves from this stigma, but I must admit there are some situations where this definition fits me perfectly. I find myself in this helicopter phase the most when I am watching my son interact with friends on the playground. I am quick to step into a situation that I assume my son cannot handle himself.  Whether it is involving sharing toys or being isolated from a group. It is difficult to sit back and watch the harshness of child play and not step in as a parent. But, I am learning to become less hovering and more observant in watching the teachings unfold within him and I can allow the Holy Spirit to fill in the gaps.

What I noticed by letting him handle his own battles was that he was already equipped with everything he needed.  Kids are so resilient, and even in the midst of hurt feelings or isolation from a group, they are so quick to bounce back and start playing again. The Holy Spirit reassures us that if we continue to train our children on biblical principles then all we have to do is allow God to work the rest of the way. We have planted the seed and its up to him to fill in the gaps. This does not mean we don’t continue to correct our kids, but what my four year old son is teaching me is that when he needs me, he will come to me. There will be opportunities where the situation will resurface at a later time when we are alone, and its during these times that I am able to re-teach any lesson that he needs to learn. Even though they are kids, the Holy Spirit is still moving within their spirit and we have to trust that the teaching we have planted is enough and God will fill in the gaps.
